The FIA launches its 2025 edition of the Fire Future Today anthology of ideas, with contributions from the Fire Minister, fire chiefs, campaigners, and academics tackling Grenfell, AI, housing safety, and firefighter wellbeing.
The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has today published the 2025 edition of its Fire Future Today anthology of ideas, featuring essays from ten senior figures across the fire sector — including Fire Minister Alex Norris MP, National Fire Chiefs Council Chair Phil Garrigan OBE, and FIA CEO Ian Moore OBE.
The collection explores the most urgent challenges facing UK fire safety, including:
- Artificial Intelligence and robotics – opportunities and risks in fire detection and response, and never-before faced ethical challenges.
- Grenfell’s legacy – whether systemic failures have truly been addressed.
- Housing reform – from Awaab’s Law to the Building Safety Act, and what comes next.
- Firefighter wellbeing – tackling online abuse, mental health pressures, and resilience.
- Future of fire and rescue – calls for reform, resourcing, and leadership.
Ian Moore OBE, FIA CEO, said in his foreword:
“This anthology provides a platform for senior voices across the fire sector to share their insight and expertise. It demonstrates the depth of leadership and experience that exists within our community, and the importance of bringing those perspectives together.
“Our role at the FIA is not to dictate the conversation, but to convene it — ensuring the ideas, challenges and innovations presented here are heard by government, regulators and industry alike.”
Alex Norris MP, Minister for Building Safety, Fire and Local Growth, added:
“By bringing fire policy closer to housing, planning, and building safety, we can take a more holistic approach—embedding safety from design through to delivery and long-term planning.
“Collections like this are so valuable. I want to thank the Fire Industry Association for bringing together such a rich and diverse set of perspectives. Your contributions will help inform the next phase of reform and ensure the UK continues to lead the way in fire safety—through innovation, professionalism, and a shared commitment to protecting lives.”
Phil Garrigan OBE, Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, wrote in his essay:
“The relevance of our fire and rescue service depends on its ability to evolve to reflect the changing risks we face. We need to be adaptable, resilient and insightful.
“To remain content with the status quo is simply not good enough for our fire and rescue service. We need to drive reform, improvement and consistency — and we need to secure the funding to deliver this ambition at pace, because public safety depends on it.”
The FIA is urging policymakers and regulators to use the anthology as a practical blueprint for action across housing safety, fire service reform, technology, and firefighter wellbeing.
